*I feel unconstrained when I do more illustrative designs but I want to do some takes on tradition too. I just completed this bright chartreuse pattern making a little collection of three brocade-esq designs. I made another for a little wall mural I just did on my friend’s wall. I’ll take a picture of that later.

In the meantime, you must check out this blog by Matthew Newton I just discovered via another favorite read-see of mine: Kitsune Noir. Both run by very cool boys. Matthew was lovely and added a link to my art site in his informer section. Thanks Matthew! Oh and do check out his/his wife’s very cool etsy shop, a collection of vintage housewares. I better tell Heather of Skinny La Minx in case she needs more mugs for reference or tea. Congrats to her for winning the coolest blog in S.A. award!

Tomorrow I promise you a post that has nothing to do with pattern. How about that?! I get pretty myopic when I’m excited about something huh?

Finding patterns in everything on my hunt for spring. Plus, Jovovich-Hawk!!!

Spring observations

I brought my camera along yesterday afternoon as I walked my pooch. I wanted to capture a few flowers and trees I’ve been admiring on my block (oh and the shadow those cool Dr. Seuss-esq flowers cast on my wall). What I realize now is, these are potential patterns and color palettes! Yum. See below for Jovovich-Hawk’s desirable spring palettes and silhouettes .

Jovovich Hawk’s Spring collection is lovely. Here are some places you can get it (I’d love this for next Fall):

I got my haircut yesterday. It was super long. She chopped a lot off. I guess it was time for a change. But boy she took a lot off.

Camouflage painters: Using the world as a backdrop. Thanks Happy Cavalier, and DFM. Plus, news about Poketo, they’re going to Glasgow.

Desiree Palmen
more Camouflage work

A while ago I posted about Laurent La Gamba’s camouflage paintings. Rag and Bone blog recently did a post on Desiree Palmen who does work within that concept as well. Both artist’s meticulous attention to detail astounds me. Read Rag and Bone’s full post. I wonder if anyone else in the world has the passion, skill, and ability to pull off such work?

Big Grazie!!!

Thanks so much for posting about my patterns Karen of Happy Cavalier, I love your blog and have found so many gems on it since I started reading it. And of course to the wonderful and endlessly supportive Erin over at Design For Mankind for posting some of my pattern applications and soliciting feedback from her readers so that I can figure out how to go about marketing these patterns. I’m working on a new one right now in a chartreuse and plum palette. Yum.

Poketo, one of the coolest sites around just wrote to tell me that they’re off to the Glasgow International Art Festival. Check this link out for the info on the art wallets and artists they’ll feature.

I’m loving these 80’s inspired Tees. I’d wear the pink one, cause everyone’s “Pretty in pink”. Plus, my NEWEST PATTERNS!

80's inspired t-shirts

New Patterns

  1. One of a kind Mammal Mag Tee by Tom Forget (a take on PUSHEAD‘S t-shirts for Metallica in the 80’s). Another post on Tom and Mammal.
  2. Mouth to mouth via Rumplo by Sahadeva (a far more awesome version of the 80’s Rolling Stone’s kisser). Another post on Tee’s from Rumplo.
  3. Vamp via Poketo by Pietari Posti (love the rad colors, akin to this). More on Poketo: 1, 2.

On another note, I’ve been churning out patterns like Apple churns out i products. Now I just have to figure out how to market them. Ugh, my least favorite aspect of art making. My lovely blogger friends are too supportive. Now I have to try to follow their advice and make a go of licensing the stuff. Anyway, check out my site. I’ve added like 10 new patterns since I launched last week.

Here are some new ones that I just added to my site:

Built-in Bookshelves, Bicycles, Charmed, Roses, Woodgrain, & Honeycomb & Bees.

Launch! A new pattern section on my website now exists. Plus, prints of my work are now in an Etsy shop!

prints & patterns

I’m thrilled to announce that my patterns are now on my site. I have many more in the works but I wanted to get it all rolling so tada! Thank you Dave for setting that up. I also finally got my Etsy shop up and running! I need some help readers, I’m looking to have samples made of my work, some fabric, wallpaper, wrapping paper, dishes, pillows…stuff like that. If anyone knows someone that could help with that or might want to collaborate let me know please.

Now, I have to say a few thank yous. I’ll make it brief. Mary Jo Matsumoto who I’ve done illustration work for ordered some prints from me, which planted the idea in my mind that I should make a shop. Shortly after that, Anna saw my work and posted it on her Absolutely Beautiful Things blog which lives up to it’s name. She also ordered a print! Then, Holly of Decor8 ( a wealth of beauty and inspiration) saw that and posted a flattering commentary on my art/ordered a couple of prints. Then, Erin of Design For Mankind (finding beauty in everything) saw Holly’s post and posted her favorite pieces of mine and ordered some prints too. I love the piggy-backing.

I can’t go into a whole flowery diatribe about these incredible women cause you’d be reading all day, but I must say that I admire them on so many levels. They not only maintain inspirational blogs & do inspirational things in their lives, but they have also made themselves accessible on so many levels. I’ve shared so many emails with them. I ask for a little feedback and they give me great gems of wisdom. I value their friendships and mentoring so much, I just had to post my thanks here. I really want to make a go of this pattern thing and I had no real idea where to begin, now I have a direction though it’s daunting. The ladies have provided me with a real support, a community that makes me feel very lucky to be an artist/blogger and have gotten to know them. I just wish they all lived here so I could thank them with a big dinner and dessert party at my place. That’s an open invite to come to Brooklyn!
