Little announcements and a sneak peak at my new Etsy shop.

Fashion156
Little news, announcements, and links to share:

  1. A site and blog I adore, Orange Beautiful and it’s blog The Scoop posted about my patterns.
  2. I have some illustrations in the new issue of Fashion156. I’m so happy that they accompany Susie Bubble‘s writing.

Plus, a mini preview launch…my Etsy shop is up and running! I’m going to announce it more loudly later when I launch the new pattern section on my site I have not even told any of my most supportive blog friends. I’m finishing up a couple of designs for it.

YEAH! I can’t wait to share. I’ve been working my ass off and neglecting all chores to my husband/web master’s dismay. The pooch is giving me the cold shoulder too. It’ll be exciting to get that going though then I can try to make it up to all who I’ve been neglecting.

Marcel Dzama: Dark art.

Marcel Dzama

I’m fascinated by Canadian artist Marcel Dzama’s work. There is a real dichotomy between the darkness and how inviting his delicate lines are. At first glance, his images are friendly almost graphic novel-esq. There are creatures, ghosts and characters interacting with humans doing things. He creates a universe where animals, spirits, and creatures co-exist. The humans have benign looks on their faces in the midst of nightmarish situations. Dzama’s ability create these narrative pieces with such a subtlety that the viewer has to go beyond the surface image and confront fear is masterful. The more I look at these pictures, the more symbolism I see. Take a peek. His work is here. He recently had a show here.

*I’ve been working like mad to get my pattern portfolio together and I’m about to launch a new section on my site. I’ll post my new patterns this week! I just learned the software I needed to make the work into actual repeats for wallpaper, textiles, and other surfaces. Can’t wait to launch.

Modern Color-field artists: Jim Lambie, Maya Hayuk, Mark Grotjahn, and more. Plus, artists who use light and color as their media: Spencer Finch, Philip Rahm, & Lisa Yuskavage.

colorful artists
As some of you know, I contribute to Color Lovers blog. The posts are far more content rich than on Maquette so I thought I’d share. Hope you are as in love with color as I am!

I recently did two extensive posts on artists whose use of color and light are just astonishing. I won’t say too much, I’ll just link to the full posts and include some enticing pictures above.

  1. Artists who use light and color as their media
  2. Modern Color Field Artists: Using the full spectrum

**Read this wonderful Maira Kalman interview from Inspiration Boards blog after you finish with the posts above.

****I’ve been working night and day on my patterns. I have to learn the software that will help me to make them into true repeats for textiles and surface designs. I can’t wait to share my progress…soon.

Aussie love. Le Cupcake & Absolutely Beautiful Things blog.

Australian Love Le Cupcake

Absolutely Beautiful Things

For some reason Australia keeps popping up in my life. I think I need to go there and nature walk, swim, surf, and….eat cupcakes.

When my mom and I were planning my wedding cupcake tree I did a Flickr hunt and found the most stunning cupcakes in the world. I’ve been following Kylie Lambert’s stream since, hankering after the beautiful photos…or…rather the subject of them.

Anna Spiro of the wonderful interior design blog Absolutely Beautiful Things ordered a print from me after getting a heads up on my work from her friend. She even forgave me when the print got lost en route to Australia. So I had to resend it (all in all making it 7 weeks late!). Ever since then I’ve been an avid reader of her beautiful blog. I just need 3-5 more rooms in my little apt. to decorate with Anna’s brilliant advice.
