Violet.com: Great site, great stuff, beautiful design. + DFM’s Blogger Yearbook Party. ++ Sex & the City Trailer!!!.

I would really like to have this stuff from Violet on my desk.
desk stuff

  1. Bubble in a box (would be great to hold paper clips and tape and stuff like that)
  2. Aviary desk set (maybe I’d write some letters and do snail mail)
  3. Universal filing system (might be better than my current system of stacks of paper and post-it notes)

**Also, if you are a blogger and are comfortable with what you looked like in high school, or at least have a sense of humor about it, submit your photos to my new pal Erin’s “Blogger Yearbook Party 2008“. Erin of Design For Mankind is just full of fun and brilliant ideas, like her E-zines. Anyway, mine will be in there. I thought using sun-in and lip-liner would be a good idea my sophomore year. As you’ll see from my photo, it was not.

**Cup Of Jo posted the Sex & The city Trailer which I’ve taken a blood oath to see with my best girls Jolie and Violet. We used to watch it together back in the day.

Table Tuesday!!: My DIY table refurbishing.

We love our apartment and neighborhood. The major decorating and assembling is behind us. Here are two tables I refurbished. I documented the process and posted photos on my flickr stream if you want to see the various stages. Oh and take a listen to the newest MITM podcast.

Coffee Table & Dining Table:
before and after table

dining table before and after

The coffee table was originally a dining table. In college I found it. It was an old, shoddy turned leg table that needed love. I cut the legs down to coffee table size and stained the top and sides yellow and the legs a burgundy wine color. Then I waxed it. Later it found it’s way into my parent’s house and garage. But when we moved they suggested that we take it back. I still loved the shape of it but the bright yellow did not work with our decor. So I stripped it (with an eco-friendly stripper that was less caustic and not as effective sadly), sanded it (wet and dry), steel wooled it. Finally I verathaned the top, painted the sides a tea rose and Watco oiled the wine colored legs. I also painted the drawer and pull and lined the inside with stunning wallpaper from Ferm Living (the same paper I’m going to use for the entry wall). Et voila.

The dining table was my parent’s and mine growing up. I had many a meal there and drew many a picture. For the last 10 years or so it was sitting in my aunt and uncle’s basement collecting Charlotte’s webs. We got it back, sanded it down, and Watco oiled it. It still has that old look but the oil made it look very fresh and shiny. I put modern chairs with it. Actually we got 8 chairs and they fit all around but when it’s not in use I stack the chairs in the corner and push the table to the wall so that the room keeps it’s open look.

materials: Danish Watco oil, Verathane varnish, paint (I used Ralph Lauren Tea Rose), sandpaper, rags, paint stripper (eco), steal wool, putty knife, brushes etc. If anyone wants to do this at home, I highly recommend it. It was simple and the results were great. Do set aside a good chunk of time.

Polyvore: A user friendly fashion DIY site. Make your dream outfit. Plus wacky post office story.

I was perusing Jeana Sohn’s blog the other day when I saw her post on Polyvore. My curiosity was struck. Within two minutes I was signed up and creating the fancy outfit above. I plan to use this to create my next limited palette outfit for Maquette. So far I’ve done blue, brown, yellow, and red.

If you have not had the chance to fall in love with Jeana Sohn’s artwork, now’s your chance.

* News: Due to all the work getting our new apartment together I was delayed in getting the glicee prints people have ordered out to them. When I went to the post office last Thursday they did not have any stiff photo mailers left so I had to buy soft envelops. The postal lady gave me a huge serated bread knife to cut apart larger cardboard mailers to put into the envelopes to protect the prints. It was sort of crazy if you think about it, a postal worker giving a customer a huge knife in the middle of a post office. Anyway, the prints I owed people are finally in the mail…fheww.

Tomorrow is “Table Tuesday”. I’m going to post all the photos of the finished tables I’ve been stripping, sanding, urethaning, painting, & oiling. They look good so tune in!

Oh and this is what I would wear to the oscars and my wedding if I could do it all again!

Seating for Eating: Modern Dose, Advanced Interiors, & CB2

Seating for Eating

Note: Dave and I just moved into our new place and only have sporadic Internet access so please excuse spotty blogging over the next few days. I can’t wait to post pictures of what we’ve done with the new place so far, but in the meantime take a look at these two exciting posts about Maquette at Decor8 and design for mankind.

I’ve been in a frenzy looking for dining chairs for our new place at a decent price: good quality and great design. We’re getting a hand-me-down table from my folks. It’s parquet wood with a dark finish, very nice. Seats 6-8. After searching all around and getting great furniture links from TYS, Decor8, and Design*Sponge, I stumbled across another few sites I’d never heard of and fell in love with these 9 Dragones stackable chairs in natural. I just ordered them. I hope they look good in the new place, otherwise I’m one hasty girl. More on the apt. soon…with photos.

  2. Eiffel Chair (Eames-esq) chair on Advanced Interiors (great link TYS)
  3. Slim Chair on CB2
